The dolphins’ society is a very complex one, and it has a very complex structure. Most individual male dolphins that were watched having homosexual relationship were also watched having sexual relationships with female dolphins. It is unclear if there are individual dolphins that are only engaging in homosexual behaviors, and do not conduct sexual relationships with female dolphins, or is it just a way for them to enjoy themselves. Unlike most animals, dolphins, just like humans, are sexually active for pleasure, not just reproduction, which leads us to the next known fact.ĭolphins engage in homosexual behaviors, just like many other animals in the nature. They, along with several species of monkeys and humanity, have the anatomy to actually have orgasms. Dolphins are among the few animals or mammals that enjoy sexual relationship. Let’s start with the facts known to science that were proven many times in the past. However, is it really true? Do dolphins really rape humans? Dolphins are enjoying sex Yes, dolphins, those cute mammals we all know as a friendly sea mammal that helps people who got lost in sea. If you will search the phrase “dolphin rape” on Google or any other search engine you will get many articles talking about human swimmers and other animals that were raped by dolphins. However, is it really true? Do dolphins really rape humans? We all know dolphins as a cute and friendly animals, are we wrong? Wesley’s most recent book is Culture of Death: The Age of “Do Harm” Medicine, a warning about the dangers to patients of the modern bioethics movement.Lately there is a buzz over swimmers that were raped by dolphins. Wesley has been recognized as one of America’s premier public intellectuals on bioethics by National Journal and has been honored by the Human Life Foundation as a “Great Defender of Life” for his work against suicide and euthanasia. Wesley is a contributor to National Review and is the author of 14 books, in recent years focusing on human dignity, liberty, and equality. The dolphins forcing themselves onto unwilling females, and killing the young, isn’t wrong. The same would apply to the term “murder.” Notice, in the first instance, I didn’t use the term “rape.” That is because an animal cannot commit rape, which is a crime that involves moral turpitude. There was lots of evidence that adult dolphins were responsible for the deaths. The injuries were mainly to the head and chest, “and multiple rib fractures, lung lacerations, and soft tissue contusions were prominent,” according to a study published in 2002. Superficially, there appeared to be nothing wrong with them, but necropsy revealed evidence of “severe blunt-force trauma”. The males also apparently kill the young:ĭuring 19, 37 young bottlenose dolphins washed up on beaches in Virginia. “Over the course of the year, a female will be herded by lots of different alliances over many different months,” wrote Connor and colleagues The females frequently “bolted”, but only managed to escape the males once in every four attempts. “Male aggression toward a consort included chasing, hitting with the tail, head-jerks, charging, biting, or slamming bodily into the female,” Connor and colleagues wrote in their 1992 paper. It is also clear that the females are not particularly willing participants. Small teams of males were usually part of larger “super-alliances” of up to 14 males. But males force females into situations of gang forced intercourse, and may kill unrelated young. With that in mind, dolphins are often romanticized as gentle sweethearts. Whatever morality they appear to show - often anthropomorphized by observers - comes from instinct, not rational discourse or deliberation worked out and changeable over time. Only we create moral codes through rational means - which is one reason they differ from society to society.Īnimals are amoral. One of the distinctions separating humans from animals is that we are a species capable of morality.
